How to Reduce Your Styling Choices

Traveling with your whole wardrobe can get stressful. Luckily, there’s a way to make your life easier and organized.

If I learned anything from Einstein, it is that not thinking about mundane stuff allows your mind to focus on greater ideas. I like to think Einstein and I share a few other things in common: an abnormally large head and our lack of interest in clothing. Did you know that he wore gray to reduced his need to waste time color coordinating? Hmmmm, instead of gray, I could have gone with everything in the color tones of reddish-orange and ignored even more social norms.

I am lying and you know it. (About my interest in clothing, not my abnormally large head!) I AM interested in clothing and looking good. But the reality is that I grew up around boys, farms, and wearing the same shirt until someone called me on it. Also, currently, and for the past three years, I have called an economy sized vehicle my HOME. I *want* to care about clothing and looking stylish but when I try via conventional methods, I don’t think I do it well. – it can take me ages to find and put together a matching outfit!

In an effort to avoid spending an incredibly large amount of time searching for the perfect outfit and accessories, I decided to take it down to a minimum and limit my choices as much as possible. The less I think about clothing, the easier my life gets.

Luckily, Sam and I are sponsored by prAna and ToeSox. That means that I get an astonishing amount of my clothing from only two online stores. This limits the amount of thinking I have to do immensely!  As a bonus, not all their clothing fits my frame so I only get a few dozen choices. Great!

Reducing my daily choices even more, whenever I do laundry I put aside the outfits for the next week- leggings, underwear, tops, and ToeSox get folded together into tight little daily bundles. That way each morning, all I have to do is pull out a bundle out and get going.

This way of doing things, not only limits the amount of thinking I have to do each morning, but also limits the possibilities of being left only with plaid pants and striped shirt combos as my clean clothing pile decreases.

I am so happy about this ‘minimal’ way of managing my wardrobe, that I often wonder why I ever wasted so much time shopping at other points in my life. I can feel my anxiety levels rising as I get reminded about the plethora of options available to me whenever I walk through a mall now. ‘Whatever is a nomadic, outdoorswoman, who lives in a car with her partner, doing at a mall in the first place, you ask? Well it’s that we are on our way to the movies because there is too much traffic and it’s unenjoyable to sit in a car without a/c.
