Bonaire: Yoga, Acro and lots of kite surfing

Our first trip to Bonaire was more than just a teaching opportunity; it was a return to our roots.

We had the privilege of teaching yoga across different locations and levels, and that alone would have been incredible. But we also got to teach SUP Yoga in be beautiful waters of Bonaire!

Yoga has always been the glue that binds all of the YogaSlackers’ practices, and reconnecting with it felt like coming home. Teaching yoga for almost three weeks made our trip to Bonaire very especial as it reminded us why and how we started this journey in the first place.

Another highlight of our trip was teaching the YogaSlackers Principles of Acrobatics workshop, one of our absolute favorites. What makes this class so special is that it’s not only beginner-friendly, but it’s also vital for anyone practicing Acro; especially those who have dabbled in acro without formal training. Sharing these foundational principles in Bonaire was a huge success, and it was amazing to see how quickly everyone picked it up.

The very next day, we took it a step further and put those skills to the test with an introduction to SUP AcroYoga. That was a true adventure! We love to see our students balancing, laughing, and getting wet. As always we were trilled to share the experience.
While we didn’t get to teach slacklining this time, we did sneak in a slackline yoga pose. We introduced our students to Pointer during one of our AcroYoga workshop. It reminded us how deeply connected these practices are and how truly accessible they can be.

We know our photos sometimes make it look like these practices are for the super young and fit, but they’re really for anyone who wants to connect, play, and explore. This trip was a reminder that we need to reflect that in how we share our stories, so that people of all levels and backgrounds feel welcome to join us in the future.
We thought we were ready for the heat. After all, we’ve spent time in the deserts of Morocco and the humid climates of Puerto Rico and Costa Rica. But we arrived in Bonaire during a heatwave, oh my goodness, it was next-level hot! Even with the wind, the heat was something else. So, we ended up a bit less adventurous on land than we’d planned. No big hikes or exploring the island’s terrain. Instead, we spent as much time as possible in the water, and lucky for us, the wind did show up.

We ended up kiting almost every single day, spending hours soaking up the sun and the heat, but in the most refreshing way possible. It was the perfect balance of sun, water, wind and making friends at the beach. Our way to embrace the elements without getting overwhelmed.
We did manage to snorkel once, which is another great activity for a hot climate. Even though Bonaire is world-famous for its diving, we didn’t manage to dive this time around. I think we were waiting for the wind to disappear as we visited Bonaire during what was meant to be the windless season. But the windless days never quite showed up! So, we left with a clear commitment to return next year.

We’re excited to come back to explore more underwater, to dive, snorkel, and to discover more both in and out of the water. Plus, we can’t wait to teach even more Acro, and finally bring slacklining to the island.
