Already had your Discovery Lesson and are ready for the next step? Our private 3-hour Kiteboarder Intermediate Course is designed to transition you from land to water, building on the fundamentals you learned in your first session. You’ll gain confidence, refine your kite control, and start practicing the essential skills needed to ride.
If you took your Discovery Lesson with us, we’ll know exactly where to start and tailor the lesson to your progress. If you’ve taken lessons elsewhere, we will check your IKO certification status to determine your skill level. If you do not have an IKO certification, the first hour of the lesson will be dedicated to reviewing the Discovery Lesson steps to ensure you’re ready to move forward.
You should be comfortable in the water and confident in your ability to handle open water conditions. We recommend that you be able to swim at least 100 meters without stopping, tread water confidently, and submerge your head underwater without needing to cover your nose. Since kiteboarding takes place in dynamic environments, it's also important to feel at ease in waves or choppy water. If you're unsure about your swimming ability, we recommend practicing these skills beforehand to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
Before moving beyond Level 2, you will need to be proficient in all the skills listed below. Not everyone is able to complete the full list within a single 3-hour lesson, and that’s completely normal! We will work with you at your pace, ensuring you develop confidence and control.
If you need more time, you can add additional hours to your course at our hourly rate ($150/hr).
Learn how to safely enter and exit the water while maintaining full control of the kite.
Practice relaunching the kite from the water after a crash, a key skill for independent riding.
You will progressively practice different body dragging techniques, starting with two-handed body dragging to maintain kite stability, followed by power stroke body dragging to generate controlled movement through the water. As you advance, you will learn upwind body dragging, an essential skill for retrieving your board, and finally, body dragging with the board, preparing you for your first water starts.
Get introduced to self-rescue techniques, ensuring you know how to handle unexpected situations safely.
Once you progress from the Steady Pull, you will begin practicing your first Water Starts and Controlled Stops. To fully graduate from the Intermediate Level course, you must be able to water start on demand in both directions and stabilize the kite to ride away confidently. These skills mark a major step toward becoming an independent rider!
We will introduce the concept of ROW. We will start with the essential right of way rules to navigate safely around other kiteboarders.
You’ll be training with Ozone and Nobile kiteboarding equipment for the best performance and safety, while BBTalking radio headsets keep you connected with your instructor for real-time feedback in and out of the water.
We love teaching lessons at Las Picuas, Puerto Rico, a beautiful spot with flat and shallow waters, making it an ideal learning environment for beginners. This location provides a safe and controlled setting for practicing your kiteboarding skills, helping you progress with confidence.
If you’re visiting Puerto Rico, consider staying near this beach! There are plenty of Airbnbs, hotels, and vacation rentals to choose from, making it easy to enjoy your kiteboarding experience while staying close to the action.
That said, we may need to choose a different location based on your availability and the wind and weather conditions to ensure the best learning experience for you.
Once you master the skills covered in the Discovery and Intermediate Courses, you’ll be well closer to riding on your own! In kiteboarding, we refer to this as becoming an Independent Rider.
That said, there’s still some work to do before you can ride completely on your own. Transitioning from water starts to riding upwind, maintaining control at different speeds, landing and launching on your own and handling changing wind conditions are essential skills required before you are considered an independent rider.
During our Independent Rider Course, you’ll refine your technique, improve your kite and board control, and gain the confidence to ride in a variety of conditions.
Everyone progresses at their own pace. While some students are ready to move on to the Independent Rider Course after this 3-hour lesson, others may need additional practice to build confidence and control. We tailor our lessons to your individual rhythm, ensuring you feel comfortable, safe, and fully prepared before advancing to the next level.
At the end of your course, we will certify you with IKO at the level you have demonstrated proficiency in. This ensures that if you choose to continue your training at another IKO-certified school, your certification will reflect your completed skills, allowing you to seamlessly pick up right where you left off.
Whether you take the next step immediately or later, kiteboarding is all about having fun and learning at your own speed.
